Pinwheel Galaxy (M101)

The Pinwheel Galaxy is a beautiful spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. It lies some 21 million light-years away with a diameter of 170,000 light-years making it about 1.6 times larger than the Milky Way. It also contains roughly a trillion stars, or about twice as many as the Milky Way.

This image was made with a Nikon Z7II and a Nikon 600mm f/6.3 PF lens at f/6.3. A total of 122 30-second exposures at ISO 3200 were made for a total of 61 minutes of total exposure time. Star tracking was done with a Fornax LighTrack II. Deep Sky Stacker was used to produce aligned tif files that were then averaged, stretched, and color corrected using Python code. Final image processing including noise reduction with Topaz DeNoise AI and some small final adjustments in Capture One.
