M106 Galaxy Astrophotograph

M106 Galaxy

M106, the large galaxy at the top, is an intermediate spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici. On summer nights in North America it can be found west of the star Phecda in the Big Dipper. M106 is a large galaxy estimated to be 135,000 light years across and containing around 1 trillion stars. Distance to M106 is estimated to be about 24 million light years. The additional galaxies in the field are, on the lower left, NGC4217, an edge-on spiral galaxy. Dwarf galaxy NGC4248 is just below M106, and NGC4220 on the far right.

This image was made with a Nikon Z7II and a Nikon 600mm f/6.3 PF lens at f/6.3. A total of 85 40-second exposures at ISO 3200 were made for a total of just over 56 minutes of accumulated exposure time. Star tracking was with a Fornax Lightrack II. Images were aligned using Deep Sky Stacker, then stacked and stretched using algorithms written in Python. Some final image processing was done with Topaz Denoise AI and Capture One.
